The Hyperswole Story

Welcome to Hyperswole Gym! Here is a quick story about who we were, who we are becoming and what we offer our members.
Hyperswole gym was established in 2016 by the late Matt Thornton. If you didn’t know Matt, he was a bit of a fitness legend around Jacksonville’s beaches. Famous for his larger than life physique with a personality to match, Matt loved helping people realize their potential in the gym. Especially student athletes! His specialty centered around coaching local athletes, many of whom went on to play at the collegiate level.

Sadly, Matt passed away unexpectedly in early November 2023, leaving the gym and the community he had so carefully created, without a leader. As fate would have it, Chris Phillips with and his wife Rachel, were working as personal trainers in Hyperswole Gym. They saw the immediate need to jump in and keep the gym open.

Fast forward and the gym is thriving! Chris and Rachel have assumed the role as owners, and Matt’s spirit is still alive inside these four walls. With his unique artwork covering every inch of the 4,000 sq ft training facility. IYKYK 😉

While Hyperswole continues to offer the cities largest indoor turf, sports specific equipment and daily workouts, the focus has shifted to providing high level private and semi private training for members.

Ben has devoted 20+ years to working with everyone from top NFL athletes to aging adults. He is an expert in eliminating pain through corrective exercise, assisted stretch, and targeted muscle tension release. Coach Molden is proud to offer sessions to the Hyperswole community.

Fitness Philosophy: Years ago I came across the perfect word to describe my overall philosophy in fitness and in life: “Kaizen” is the Japanese principle of “constant incremental improvement.” As a self-described “type A” person I love the idea of “constant improvement” for obvious reasons but the word “incremental” is also crucial, especially when you are training. It allows you to make changes & improvements slowly, methodically, & correctly without the strain, injury, and stress that come when all you want are fast results – after all, perfection cannot be rushed.
